BOOK:
THE WORLD BELONGED TO US
It's hot outside, hot enough to turn on the hydrants and run through the water-
and that means it's finally summer in the city! Kids on one Brooklyn block take
advantage of everything summertime has to offer. Freedom to meet their friends and
make the streets their playground--jumping double Dutch, playing tag and hide-and-seek, building forts, chasing ice cream trucks, and best of all, believing anything is possible.
The block belongs to them and they rule their world all summer long.
RHYME: HE'S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS
He’s got the whole world in his hands
He’s got the whole world in his hands
He’s got the whole world in his hands
He’s got the whole world in his hands
Repeat changing the whole word to:
You and me brother
You and me sister
The little bitty babies

LITERACY TIP
Spending time engaging your students in conversation helps them develop vocabulary and a knowledge of the world. Have your students label what they see and explain how things work as part of both your lessons and just general conversation in the classroom. This will help them increase their oral language skills, and also help them develop conversational skills to feel connected to you and their fellow classmates.
