BOOK:
THE DAY YOU BEGIN
Jacqueline Woodson’s lyrical text and Rafael López’s dazzling art reminds us that we all feel like outsiders sometimes-and how brave it is that we go forth anyway. And that sometimes, when we reach out and begin to share our stories, others will be happy to meet us halfway.
RHYME: BUTTERFLY BREATHING
Sit comfortably with your eyes closed.
Place your fingertips gently on your shoulders.
Take a slow, gentle breath in through your nose,
raising your elbows as you breathe in.
Hold your breath for a moment and then breathe out
as slowly and calmly as you can, lowering your
elbows slowly as you breathe out.
THE DAY YOU BEGIN WORD OF THE WEEK
Use this week's Word of the Week, BRAVE, to extend your learning:
1. Say and trace each letter of this week's word.
2. Sound out the word letter–by-letter.
3. Think of other words that rhyme with brave. These can be real words
or made-up ones that are silly and non-sensical!
CRAFT
Make a Self Portrait
Directions:
Each child will receive:
1 Piece Drawing Paper
1. Use pencil and crayons to design your own self portrait. And, be sure to SIGN YOUR NAME, because there is no one quite like you
LITERACY TIP
Self-confidence plays an important role in how children approach books as they are beginning to learn how to read. Some ways you can help boost your students' confidence and help them see reading as a positive experience include letting them pick the book or subject that you read about, praising new readers on how well they are doing and not overcorrecting any small mistakes they may make. Having new readers read to a toy, pet or younger sibling is a great way to get reluctant readers excited about reading and help build their self-esteem. Did you know that kids can read to therapy dogs at the Mandel Program during our Dog Tales Program?
