BOOK:
CAN I GIVE YOU A SQUISH?
Kai is a little mer-boy who's big on hugs--or "squishes," as he and his mama call them. But not everyone's a fan of Kai's spirited embrace, which he discovers soon after squishing a puffer fish, who swells up in fright! Kai feels awful; but with the help of his friends, he figures out another way to show his affection, and then everyone demonstrates their preferred ways of being greeted. Because, as Kai realizes,
"Every fish likes their own kind of squish."

LITERACY TIP
In Can I Give You a Squish? different characters have to maneuver their own emotions and understand those of their friends. The ability to label emotions is a developmental skill
not present at birth—it must be learned. It is also important to note that some
children’s ability to identify, understand, and label both their own and other people's emotions develop at a slower rate than others. Using books to help children explain how they feel about things, and understand other people's feelings, is a great way to foster
emotional literacy as well as enhance children's feeling vocabulary.
