BOOK:
I'M THE BIGGEST THING IN THE OCEAN
Author & Illustrator: Kevin Sherry
As a cocky squid swims through the ocean bragging, children will get an eyeful of undersea
life—from shrimp and jellyfish to turtles and more. With its snappy text and bright,
bold artwork, this winning modern classic is guaranteed to have even the youngest
of readers grabbing at pages and laughing along.
RHYME: FIVE LITTLE FISH
Five little fish swimming in the sea
Teasing Mr. Shark,
“You can’t catch me,
No you can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Shark
As quiet as can be,
And … Snapped that fish
Right out of the sea!
(Count down until no fish are left)

LITERACY TIP
Young children are able to absorb an amazing amount of information on topics of interest to them. They become experts, often knowing more than we do on some subjects. By taking advantage of their eagerness to learn, you can build their scientific knowledge. Non-fiction books can be a great way to extend interest and learning in a topic first introduced in a story.
Some non-fiction books that you can introduce your students to
from our circulating book bins include:
A New Green Day by Antoinette Portis
I Spy Under the Sea by Edward Gibbs
Ant! Ant! Ant! An Insect Chant by April Pulley Sayre
Monarch Butterflies by Gail Gibbons
Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! by Bob Barner
