LITERACY TIP
You don't actually need to read books aloud to children in order for them to benefit. Simply looking at and talking about the illustrations in books helps children build comprehension, vocabulary, oral language, inferring and predicting skills. Having children "picture walk" through a book and describe what they see helps introduce the concept of building narrative and reinforces that images can help to tell a story, sometimes as much as or even without words.
Have your children "picture walk" through One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller and explain
what the characters are feeling, and why.
Some other books with few (or no) words that are great for picture walks include:
The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney
Where's Walrus by Stephen Savage
Truck by Donald Crews
Goodnight, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
The Snowman by Raymond Briggs
