BOOK:

THE YEAR WE LEARNED TO FLY

On a dreary day, a brother and sister heed their grandmother’s advice: “Use those beautiful and brilliant minds of yours. Lift your arms, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and believe in a thing.” to use their imaginations lift them up and out of their boredom. Jacqueline Woodson’s lyrical text and Rafael Lopez’s dazzling art celebrate the extraordinary ability to lift ourselves up and imagine a better world.

LITERACY TIP

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."

Albert Einstein was onto something when he said this. Encouraging children to use their imagination when they play, create and learn is an important way to prepare them for success in both school and life. Imaginative play support both acquisition of knowledge and capacity for creative thinking and is critical for developing oral language.
